The FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off Thursday morning, July 20th at 3a, running through August 20th. With the time zone in Australia/New Zealand 16 hours ahead of DC’s time, (as broken by Barred in DC) DC will be allowing bars and restaurants to open 24 hours a day (with a booze break of 4-6a) during the month-long soccer tournament, with the recent passage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup Emergency Amendment Act of 2023.
Matches will kick off roughly (though varies by the day) at 9p eastern – 8:30a, though the bulk of matches are during 3am-8am ish. Only about 8 matches are during the hours that bars are usually open.
The two-time defending champion US Women’s National Team is set to kick off:
- Fri, July 21st at 9p (v Vietnam),
- Wed July 26th at 9p (v the Dutch),
- Tue Aug 1st at 3a (v. Portugal).
- Updated
- Round of 16 – Sun Aug 5th at 5a
- Quarterfinals – Fri Aug 11th at 3:30a
- Semifinals – Tues Aug 15th at 4a
- Final – Sun Aug 20th at 6a
All bars with TVs will show the first two matches because of their time, but because of the the time difference and fact that many matches are during the 4-6a booze break, much fewer bars will be open to show the overnight matches – 90 bars ponied up the $100 to be open later, but about 65 are clubs/lounges that probably won’t even show them.
