The 2022 FIFA World Cup, kicks off at 11a Eastern time on Sunday November 20th with host Qatar facing off against Ecuador, and ends with the Final at 10a on Sunday, December 18th (schedule).

Between Mon Nov 21st-Friday Dec 2nd there will be typically 4 group stage games daily (first week 5a, 8a, 11a, and 2p; 2nd week 2 matches apiece at 10a and 2p). The rest of the tournament has 1-2 games each day on at 10a or 2p. Qatar is 8 hours ahead of ET. The US qualified this time, and all 3 group matches will be at a pretty convenient 2p time (Mon 11/21 v. Wales, the massive Black Friday v. England, and Tues 11/29 v. Iran)-expect DC bars to be awesome for at least the first two.

Although many matches will be on free TV (FOX) and rest on FS1, expect many DC bars to be lively affairs filled with fans of the competing nations, as there are few places better in the US to do so. It will be a bit different than any other World Cup since the tournament is in the middle of American football season/cooler weather due to the Qatar scorching hot summer climate.

Although there will only be matches before 10a on 8 days (Nov 21st-28th, nicely during Thanksgiving weekend) and only 7 matches before 8a, DC Council has passed a law, (the 2022 World Cup Emergency Amendment Act) allowing any bar to pay $100 for the privilege to be open for boozing at 6a, the already permitted statutory earliest time (one hour earlier than 2018). In a change from the previous iterations of the law (in effect also in 2010 when WC was in South Africa but not when it was in Brazil in 2014), bars can serve booze until 4a daily (1 or 2 hours longer than normally allowed) and be open 24 hours (with no booze allowed to be consumed/sold/purchased for the 2 hour 4a-6a period) , for the entire tournament, even when there aren’t games on. This year 124 bars paid the $100 (see list here)
