- My Brother’s Place announced that it won’t be re-opening as My Place after all this week, alluding to licensing issues. (ABRA has to approve trade name changes).
- The long-awaited patio at Duffy’s Irish Pub finally opens. (U Street Buzz)
- Nearby, next to Dodge City, shipping containers that will make up a German Beer garden, to be called El Roy, are put in place on U Street. Supposedly still on track for a fall opening. (PoPville)
- Fritz Hahn (Amazon.com/wapo) does a great public service and writes about the happy hours at some of D.C.’s newest restaurants: Teddy & the Bully Bar (daily 3-7p, Mon-Th 10p-12a, Fri-Sat 11p-1a), Azur (daily 5-7p), Casa Luca (Mon-Th 4-6p), Ghibellina (Tues-Sun 4:30-6:30p), B Too (M-F 4-7p), Bearnaise (daily 4-7).
- The top 10 cocktails on 14th Street, as rated by Thrillist, include selections from Bar Pilar, El Centro DF, Black Jack, Ghibellina, Estadio, Black Whiskey, & DNV.
- Chez Billy in Petworth announces that it will be extending its happy hour to the weekends. $5 drinks 5:30-7:30p everyday, along with oysters. (Twitter)
- Via WaPo/Going Out Gurus, Shaw’s neighborhood business group, sends out handy list of all the new businesses set to open in that large neighborhood. I count 8 bars. GoG creates a nice map based on this list.
- As mentioned in this space last week, Jack Rose provides more details about its Tiki Thursday happy hour, which runs from 5-10p. $6.50 tropical cocktails (half-off), and $2 off draft beers at the “Tiki Bar at Jack Rose.” Press release is unclear whether the whole rooftop is a tiki bar or just one of the 3 bars upstairs. - Work starts on Dacha Beer Garden coming to 7th/Q NW, according to PoPville. ABRA approved the open-air bar’s settlement agreement with the local ANC on July 31st.
- ABRA also approved Bin 1301‘s settlement agreement with the local ANC on July 31st.
- Hoping to fill the black hole of no bars in the middle of H Street, Chupacabra applies for a liquor license for the small taco joint. (PoPVille)
- The internet goes crazy about Black Cat’s request to build a 1500 square foot room with bar on a new 3rd floor. Black Cat says “it has no immediate plans to expand.” (PoPville, Washington City Paper/Arts Desk, DCist)
- The internet also goes crazy about the campaign by Cause, the “philanthropub,” to have the public pay to fix its A/C, instead of its own operating funds, so that it can continue to donate proceeds to charity. - Food & Wine names Duffy’s as having one of America’s top 25 chicken wings. This is not a surprise to anyone who follows wings in DC.
- Black Jack’s secret menu in August celebrates the great classic drink, the Collins. (Tumbler)
- The original hipster spot Wonderland celebrated its 9th anniversary on Sunday. (Fritz Hahn)
