Murphy’s of DC, the Irish pub in Woodley Park, will close its doors Sunday night after 28 years. The bar confirmed this afternoon that it has lost its lease; this news was first reported earlier this morning by the (recently closed) Duffy’s Irish Pub (in a now-deleted tweet) and then confirmed by PoPville. Murphy’s, which has been open since March 1986, was popular with conventiongoers attending conferences at the Omni Shoreham and Marriott Wardman Park across the street, as well as locals looking for a unpretentious atmosphere (Barred in DC only visited once, spending a fun, somewhat random New Year’s Eve in 2008/2009). No word what will go in its place or if anything will happen to the mini-chain’s other two locations in Old Town Alexandria and Virginia Beach; a PoPville tipster suggests there will be an fine dining Italian restaurant in its place. To pay their last respects, all of the long-time servers, bartenders, managers, and regulars will be congregating Sunday night.
