Mackey’s Replaces Laughing Man Tavern on St. Paddy’s Day

Mackey’s Public House New Location

As first reported by Barred in DC (and then by PoPville), The Laughing Man Tavern has been transformed into Mackey’s Pyblic House at 1306 G St. NW, the bar announced on its Facebook account just two days after ABRA approved its name change. The Irish pub, which was in Dupont/Midtown from 1999 until just a few weeks ago, opened in just in time for St. Paddy’s Day (see an exhaustive list of activities here). The Laughing Man originally opened in January 2009.

Darnell’s Bar Closes After 6 Years

Darnell’s Bar, the divey, dancey, loungey, diverse bar off U Street, closed at the end of January, Barred in DC has learned. The cozy spot, officially known as Darnell’s at Manchester, shut down after 6+ years after the building housing it was sold at Florida and W NW. Darnell Perkins started the bar in spring 2010 and was a popular, homey spot over the years. Darnell recently indicated to ABRA that the license will be sold soon.

Dacha Reneges on Yet Another Promise; Now Serving Liquor in Beer Garden

Dacha
, the ridiculously popular Shaw beer garden, has apparently reneged on its promise to its neighbors (as told to Barred in DC) from April 2015 that it “will never serve liquor in the outside beer garden.” Its latest press release announcing the opening of the 2017 season highlights its new cocktails and $6 Stoli mixed drinks. The earlier promise came in response to the bar’s application to change its liquor license to sell the hard stuff; the bar said that a “very few hysterical folks misinform everyone” and that the liquor would be for the inside bar only (which still has yet to really open aside from private events). Dacha was subject to one of the largest fines in DC liquor licensing history ($42,000) and had its liquor license suspended for 3 weeks in 2016 for routinely operating at a capacity larger than it was permitted legally.

This news comes the day that the Washington Business Journal learned of Dacha’s plans to open in the new Dock79 building across Potomac Avenue from the south side of Nationals Park, just steps away from  the new Bardo River Brewery.

December Instagram photo sent to me by “A Concerned Shaw Neighbor”

I actually received an email from “A Concerned Shaw Neighbor” back in December with subject line “More lies from Dacha” with the picture above, but I let that side since a topping seems different and it looked tasty. In case you’re wondering, no, the settlement agreement doesn’t restrict Dacha from serving liquor outside (I’m not a lawyer-ok I forgot I am-but I’m pretty sure restricting serving a particular type of liquor in one area of a bar open for business isn’t cool with ABRA).

If you’re counting at home, here’s a list of promises that Dacha hasn’t quite fulfilled (many of them were surely out of their control but it’s not a good hit piece without being unfair):

  • Not serve liquor outside
  • Agreed to 126 person capacity initially but had 300+ people routinely
  • Selling to German brewery (after firing half their staff temporarily)
  • Open large bar indoors with room for 250
  • Open in Mount Vernon Triangle

Mackey’s to Replace Laughing Man Tavern

Mackey’s Public House is set to replace Laughing Man Tavern at 13th and G Streets, Barred in DC has learned. Jessica Sidman reported on February 10th that the pub had lost its lease near 19th and L and was moving to a larger space in Metro Center, though the specific address was not announced.

On Wednesday, ABRA approved a “stock transfer” for the two bars (see page 20), and District Karaoke, which has held its Monday night karaoke league at Mackey’s for years, announced the news on its Facebook page.

A person who answered the phone at Laughing Man confirmed that Mackey’s indeed was moving there.
